  1. As a fan I have a sense of ownership over a team. It’s “my team.“ I know it’s dumb but it’s true. We are enculturated to nurture this self-deception even when nothing else in our society works like this. But it’s their team and they don’t really care if we like it or not and no Ken Burns documentary tugging at your heart-strings can change that. MLBs brash bottom line is like an off-key note in a familiar tune. It jolts you. They’re not making any attempt to keep the myth of baseball alive. I know that money makes the world go around, but so do commonly held mythologies. They motivate people. Baseball is an American Homeric legend. There’s something beautiful about it. These owners are poor stewards of the myth.

  2. Cuomo was fired because of serious sexual misconduct allegations against him when at another network. After the person came forward CNN did their own investigation and found it had some merit and fired him. That took a lot for CNN to do because they lost another 20 viewers the can't afford to lose. Hannity has no such allegations against him but I'm sure a liberal will make one up if you want. They're real good at making up things to make people look bad.

  3. Multiple reasons: (1) Games have gotten too slow. (2) There is not enough action - too many home runs and strikeouts. (3) Free runners in extra innings! I can't watch that at all. (4) Too much emphasis on playoffs and that's just going to get worse. (5) Elimination of my favorite minor league teams. (6) Other stuff in my life not related to baseball. The Tigers getting better will help, but I don't like the direction the game is heading.

  4. Because it's good for the morale of the young players and coaches. Go tell the players in that locker room post game when they were having a good time enjoying the win that it meant nothing. When you have a young team like this, with a young coaching staff that's in the very beginning of a rebuild, winning is important. Also, the Lions drafted arguably the 3 best players in franchise history at 2,2 and 3. Chances are that the Jags could take an offensive tackle anyway leaving the Lions their #1 choice. Winning, especially for the reasons I mentioned above, should never be frowned upon especially in a draft where there's no true #1 prospect.

  5. only 3 people can do my wife's job in the ICU at her hospital. Medical professionals is not a one size fits all thing. You can't just transfer someone from another department. There's specialties. That's why the field hospitals didn't work. Anyone they would have been able to treat probably didn't really need to be in the hospital to begin with. It's not about mass casualty events like gunshots and trauma. If anyone could work in the field hospital then chances are they were already working in a brick and mortar hospital

  11. I still love the game. I want an unscripted event that has unambiguous results that sometimes demonstrates character and heroism. Other sports appear more formulaic and scripted and the degree to which Rob Manfred is manipulating events with different quality balls for different games is a definite problem. Baseball is harder to script. Its still hard to hit a baseball and hard to put one exactly where you want it. The narrative of the Max Scherzer playoff relief appearance against the Oakland As when he cames in and loads the bases and then gets out of it through his sheer force of will is hard to repeat. Aaron Rogers getting an extra untimed down as the clock expires to throw a hail mary seems pretty ridiculous in comparison.

  12. Any team that throws a game just to draft 1 instead of 2 will never win even if they get the 1st pick. There is still a great chance the Lions will get the player they want. If they don't, they will get a very good player. There is more than one player in this draft. Players don't care about draft position. They go out to win. If they see management purposely trying to lose a game for draft position, you will lose the locker room.

  13. This is pretty much standard now for ICU hospital Intensivists and Nurses. My wifes ICU has this same policy. You can't take a nurse off the floor and expect them to be able to take care of ICU patients, you have to work under another ICU nurse for at least 6 months maybe longer before you can take your own patient.

  15. Change can be good, but changes which don't address real needs are bad. There have always been changes in baseball in my lifetime - designated hitter, interleague play, free agency, etc. I haven't always liked the changes, but it seemed that baseball unlike other sports was slow to change and took years considering possibilities before anything happened. There seemed to be a reluctance to tamper with a game that was working well and I liked that for the most part. Under Manfred, things seem to happening so quickly and for no reason. Putting a runner on base to start extra innings? wtf? It seems like they don't care about the game and are just treating it like a generic entertainment event wanting to squeeze as much money out of it as they can.

  16. Vikings and Bears will both be launching rebuilds that are behind the Lions. Green Bay is unlikely to go through a “rebuild” per se, even if Rodgers leaves, but I don’t know if they’ll be successful with Jordan Love at the helm. Detroit Lions your 2023 NFC North Champions?! *sips kool aid*

  17. I would not want to see Eric Ebron has a two way player. Not only would he drop the pass, he'd drop the INT as well.

  20. Very well put. I under estimated how crucial commonly held mythologies are to a society until relatively recently. If they don't get their act together they'll be creating new mythologies that don't benefit the game. Given the unquantifiability of myth, I have my doubts it has any chance to outweigh money.

  21. The reason there were less of the last series or two is because no one hardly bought them. By that time of the year, it had turned to football season and all the kids were buying football cards instead of baseball cards.

  27. Trump says US will have 'substantially under' 100,000 deaths from coronavirus, lower than initial estimates "The minimum number was 100,000 lives and I think we'll be substantially under that number," Trump said during a White House press conference. "Hard to believe that if you had 60,000, you can never be happy, but that's a lot fewer than we were originally told and thinking." I swear, people just memory-hole this stuff...

  29. I love me some Bol Bol! Seriously every time I have ever watched him he did something that impressed me so adding him just gives the Pistons one more player for me to be interested in. Sure it's a long shot he turns into anything decent in the NBA but I think there is atleast a chance he can be a piece for the team going forward so that makes him intriguing to me.

  37. Trump treated COVID as a PR problem instead of a public health crisis. No one blames him for the creation of the virus. Just by memory, some of the things he did that made it worse were downplaying the seriousness at the outset, claiming it was a hoax, saying it would go away like a miracle, claiming it would be gone by easter, comparing it to the flu and calling it kung flu, hosting super spreader events like his Tulsa rally and supreme court confirmation with disregard for protocols, resisting wearing a mask and mandates, resisting testing because it would add more cases, publicly questioning the CDC and Fauci and attacking their credibility, promoting unproven cures he got from a pillow salesman, attacking blue states and governors by withholding assistance and calling on his minions to liberate them, and blaming Obama for the pandemic because he gutted Obama's pandemic response team.

  38. Just to add a comment to the idea that Trump is not responsible for unnecessary deaths, he most certainly is. Americans die from Covid at a rate that is more than 3 times that of Canadians, which amounts to 600,000 unnecessary deaths so far. He spent most of 2020 mocking people for wearing masks and telling his idiot throng that "it's a flu", turning mask resistance and, by extension, anti-vaxxing into a MAGA core value. He directly killed the guy, was it in Denver?, who drank the aquarium cleaner after Trump said hydroxy was a cure. So let's not hear any more about "we'll never know how many Americans would have died under a different presidency", of course we will. Divide the eventual total by 3.

  39. no-one is going to give up on him in his 1st season, but no doubt we had to have hoped that a 1/1 could be a little more dominating out of the box.

  40. It's hard not to be at least a little bit disappointed. I was convinced before the season that at the very least, we could make him our main facilitator on offense. Now I am wondering if it would help him long term to play next to a more traditional point. He is a really good passer but so far, I just don't think the offense functions well when he is the primary ball handler.

  42. my earliest lions memory was billy sims on the cover of sports illustrated when they started 4-0 in 1980 (and missed the playoffs). then going 8-7 in 81 and ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS BEAT THE BUCS IN THE LAST GAME OF THE YEAR AND THEY BLEW IT. then the strike year when they (and everyone else) made the playoffs at 4-5 and got obliterated by the skins. and then. 1983. they had the niners. they had them. despite FIVE gary danielson picks they had a 40 yard field goal to win the game. and little buddha at his grandparents' home in ypsi watching between his fingers cause he couldnt look, monte clark in prayer on the sideline, and reliable eddie murray just needing this one simple kick to send the lions to the nfc championship game and he.... ....pushed it wide. i came in with pain and its been nothing but pain since.
