There is a larger point though, regardless of whether these cops turn out to have acted well or badly, the basic expectation is wrong. You can put the best SWAT team in the world on the site and it doesn't change that the perp has all the initiative, the good guys have no visibility into what is happening inside. Every tactical choice is fraught with danger in a hostage situation. There is simply no way you can expect a good resolution out of a situation like this - by the time it happens you are already too little and too late no matter what resources you think you have. There is ONE way to stop these - eliminate the potential perps by taking better care of people in the society, and eliminate the weapons they can get their hands on if you do miss one. One and only ONE answer. The rest is pure bullshit.4 points

Things you can't buy/do at 18: Tabacco Alcohol Rent a hotel room Rent a car Things you can buy Assault Rifle Can we at least start here?3 points

I think the parents' issue is: why are the cops not going in to engage the shooter and rescue children while he is inside murdering them? And if the cops are not going to go in to do it, someone has to go in to stop the guy and/or rescue children. Otherwise the shooter is going to murder all the children.3 points

I don't think you can place any blame oln the cops based on that video. You can't just let people do the cops job in a shooting incident. That's what the gun nuts are always suggesting we should do and I am vehemently opposed to that.2 points

It would be nice if we got atleast one ace out of our "big 3". I suppose realistically 1 out of 3 was probably the best we could've hoped for.2 points

I'd be ok with allowing an 18 year old have an assault type rifle if they signed up for a three year military tour first.1 point

This a fine start Romad, but I still say the weapon has no useful purpose. Single action long guns for public sale only.1 point

So, Ukraine and multiple random slaughters seem to be getting in the way of people paying attention to this stuff.1 point

How about people with "mental health challenges", whatever that is, can't buy guns? How you determine that, who knows. Maybe we should require a note from a doctor who has done specific types of tests and will certify to that under penalty of perjury. Of course we know how well that will go over because guns are "god given rights dammit"1 point

GOP cannot allow government (especially the federal government) to be seen as a positive force in people's lives If the government can help address problems, then maybe GOP membership will start wanting that Instead they preach nihilism bonded to "other"ism : you cannot have anything because the "other" might get something too; basically the GOP has trained its people to reject programs that might help themselves, because they know the "other" might get the same help, and they cannot stomach that1 point

Yes… there are many doing this country wide. Good for them…. Let’s listen to the kids who are actually the ones the guns are pointed at… and let’s find a way to actually address their VERY real fears. And, God willing, please have their elected representatives in Washington grow a pair, and do the right thing.1 point

Kids have walked out at Oxford High School as a protest. Maybe every school kid should walk out until something, ANYTHING is done.1 point

this may be a little unfair. It is a basic tenet of 1st responder training not to allow more people to go into a dangerous area. If the police were not responding the situation in the building adequately that is completely open to any fair criticism, but not keeping more people from entering it.1 point

And they don't need another guard, seems like a weak rumor to me. I do think the Kings are a prime candidate for a trade down though which will obviously impact the Pistons. I could see Indiana being interested to get a shot at the hometown kid Ivey to pair with Haliburton, with the rumors also being that they might very well trade Brogdon. I just have a feeling that something unconventional will happen with the Kings pick because.... Kings.1 point

Figured this is an appropriate thread for this, I passed my CISSP test today. Last time I really had to study for something my kids were so young, you'd think it would've been easier this time. Just glad it's behind me.1 point

So basically … what we’re telling our children is that, hey, you’re not safe at school, so we’re gonna teach you how to hide. What the fuck man… Is this the best we can do for our kids? This is the best we can do? How do you look at this and other incidents (which by the way they were 27 other SCHOOL shooting incidents so for this year. Can you comprehend how insane that sounds? 27 shooting incidents in school so far this year)….and not even have a dialogue?? We have to do something. God damn it…we have to do something.1 point

I would ask you, why aren’t people of Wyoming deserving of the same representation as California in the Senate? There is a reason the phrase, “fly over states” exists. I understand your point but don’t think we’ll agree on this.1 point

this is a cannard. You are either a democracy or you are not. If you want to have a chamber that is more deliberative, give them single 10 yr terms, don't elect them non-democratically. Non-democratic election doesn't insulate them from political whims, it just makes them subject to the whims of a tiny minority - not helpful in any scheme. Tiny states should have tiny voices, they represent a tiny number of people. We call that 'democracy'1 point
