I don't know if there's any truth to that or not, but it's sort of beside the point in that we have assured ourselves yet another four years of inane arguments about what he means and doesn't mean whenever he opens his trap. Just not playing that game.... he should be held accountable for his words just like anyone else would be.4 points

Yeah it would be unprecedented to hire a broadcaster that was a former linebacker as GM.3 points

I agree on both points, I just don't think that waiting another year to make improvements externally is necessarily going to give them a better chance to win. Rignt now, they play in a relatively soft division and have the best pitcher in baseball. They are ready now.3 points

This game was the game that changed the trajectory of the franchise. This was the game same old Lions died. The Lions have put good runs together in lost seasons before. This game was in a stadium they were 3-27 in in the prior 30 years. Rodgers was 15-1 in December and January at Lambeau. The Packers had everything to play for. The Lions then followed this game up with a win the next season at Kansas City. This was the game Campbell became Lionized, but not in the way we used to say it around here.2 points

But at least kids won't go to school and come home a different gender. Those illegals, too. Weird how the New Orleans and Vegas bombings dropped off the radar so quickly after they couldn't pin it on illegals or the far left and that they both served in the military.2 points

Buckle up for trade season. This is the sports news world these days. Pistons have cap space so they "could be a potential suitor" for every made-up trade that will get these guys some clicks. And then the next "reporter" writes a story saying "there are rumors that the Pistons could be interested in [player previously named]", and so on.1 point

I think there is some real risk that the Lions get raided at every level. Teams see how popular, praised and successful they have become and everyone wants a hit of that.1 point

This is kind of an odd one. I love Spielman, but he has no executive experience in the NFL except for this current "special assistant" role. I'm not even really sure all of what he does here, but he's great, because he led to the hiring of Campbell and Holmes. It seems like Ray Agnew would be a more sensical target, but I have heard very little smoke around his name.1 point

Requiring no-bond detention solely on the basis of a charge or arrest raises serious due process concerns. Prolonged detention without access to an individualized bail or bond hearing is an extreme measure in American law. Nearly all people facing criminal charges in the criminal justice system are entitled to an individualized bond hearing, even on charges as serious as murder. This bill is particularly extreme because it applies mandatory immigration detention solely on the basis of an arrest or charge, risking the prolonged detention of people innocent of the charges brought against them. These provisions also exacerbate racial disparities because Black and Brown people are arrested at disproportionately high rates throughout the United States. https://www.nilc.org/articles/nilc-opposes-the-h-r-29-the-laken-riley-act/?utm_source=chatgpt.com1 point

The bill is duplicative – the federal government already has the authority to detain all people facing deportation proceedings. The bill amends the “mandatory detention” provision of federal immigration law to apply to undocumented people who are charged with, arrested for, or convicted of any theft-related offense. But the Department of Homeland Security already has statutory authority to detain any undocumented person facing deportation proceedings including those charged with a criminal offense. What the bill does is apply “mandatory detention,” requiring detention without any opportunity to even request release on bond. In practice, this means the bill would require the government to detain an undocumented mother arrested on charges of shoplifting diapers without even granting her a bond hearing, for the duration of her deportation proceedings. https://www.nilc.org/articles/nilc-opposes-the-h-r-29-the-laken-riley-act/?utm_source=chatgpt.com1 point

The bill would hobble the executive branch’s ability to make immigration policy, whether a Democrat or Republican is in the White House. The bill guarantees states standing to sue the federal government over a breathtakingly wide array of immigration-related actions ranging from detention and visa policy to detention and release decisions in individual immigration cases. Federal agencies, under Democrat or Republican control, would face litigation at every turn from states governed by the opposing political party. Administrations would likely stop even trying to issue new immigration policies when faced with endless litigation over every single memo and regulation. https://www.nilc.org/articles/nilc-opposes-the-h-r-29-the-laken-riley-act/?utm_source=chatgpt.com The bill is a recipe for chaos in the federal courts – chaos the Constitution intended to avoid. The doctrine of “standing” is a constitutional doctrine (based on Article III’s requirement that a case or controversy exist for the federal courts to intervene) that guarantees courts are not wasting their time on disputes where there is no potential harm for the courts to ameliorate. Yet the Laken Riley Act provides blanket standing regardless of whether a state has any interest whatsoever in the case or policy being challenged. Without the ability to dismiss for lack of standing, the federal courts would immediately be drowning in immigration lawsuits. https://www.nilc.org/articles/nilc-opposes-the-h-r-29-the-laken-riley-act/?utm_source=chatgpt.com1 point

The Lions have had a franchise QB for the past 15 years. There was consternation after winning at the end of 2021 and losing the number one pick to Jacksonville. The Lions still got Hutchinson and Jacksonville is still a poverty franchise.1 point

Now to be honest, Carter probably had the funds to write a check and create more housing for the poor than the efforts of his own labor ever could so working on habitat houses was hardly the most altruistic thing he could have been doing, per se. And maybe he wrote some of those checks. But the value in his service to Habitat was never in his individual labor, it was that he was great recruiter and ambassador for the org, and that's fine - I don't knock the value in that at all. For most Americans the time they can donate to community service is more valuable than the amount of money they have available to donate so that recruitment matters. But as a general rule I wouldn't consider it all that redeeming for a rich person to donate some of his time if he isn't also donating some of his money!1 point

If they have't extended Skubal by now I think the odds are he's gone when his deal is up. It's just cooked into the current system. To me that's just a base assumption you have to accept Riley is a tough call, between his style of play, the injuries he's already had and the brutal way he torques his back on his swing I'm guessing they they still have a measure of 'wait and see' in any plans to extend him.1 point

AFC Wildcard (2) Bills over (7) Broncos, 41-17 On further reflection, the Broncos wins this year aren't impressive. Bucs, Jets, Raiders, Saints, Panthers, Falcons, Raiders, Browns, Colts, and Chiefs. Notwithstanding the Chiefs' backups, they beat one playoff team in that bunch, and it was the Bipolar Bucs in week three. I think they might get smoked by the Bills. (6) Steelers over (3) Ravens, 21-17 An early shocker. Everyone is counting out Tomlin, but he's one of the best coaches in the league and has a defense that was designed to slow down Lamar. Maybe I'm wildly wrong, but I won't be shocked if they do it. (5) Chargers over (4) Texans, 28-16 I don't think the Texans belong. The Chargers defense might be the best in the league (though they aren't well tested). The Chargers should win this game though. Divisional (1) Chiefs over (6) Steelers, 27-14 This might be a closer game than people expect after it wasn't close on Christmas, but I don't think Russell Wilson can do anything substantive against the Chiefs defense. (5) Chargers over (2) Bills, 42-24 And then I think we see the Bills defense collapse. You never know what you'll get with that Chargers offense, but the Bills defense is a ticking time bomb. Maybe they do enough, but I feel like they're going to eventually put Allen into a really bad situation where he needs to play from a 14+ point deficit early. Allen will then try to do too much, and it'll snowball into another long offseason. AFC Championship (5) Chargers over (1) Chiefs, 20-13 A stunner, but I think it's a real possibility. The Chargers defense is no joke, and Harbaugh is putting the offense in positions to succeed. They've given up 17 and 19 to the Chiefs in their first two matchups and the Chiefs needed a stroke of luck and a comeback both times. If the Chargers find a way to get to 20, they might win this thing. NFC Wildcard (7) Packers over (2) Eagles, 34-27 The Packers are better than they've let on in these last two weeks. And while LaFleur is a douche, he's 3x the coach Sirianni ever will be. Meanwhile the Eagles don't even know who their QB will be, and the Packers have a top run defense in the league. I think the Packers pull of an upset that is reminiscent of the Cowboys game last year. (3) Buccaneers over (6) Commanders, 31-24 This should be a good game. I think Baker Mayfield is a seriously underrated QB, while Jayden Daniels hasn't seen the bright lights of a playoff game yet. Makes the difference. (4) Rams over (5) Vikings, 28-27 This could go either way and is probably the game of the wildcard round. I think the Lions exposed Sam Darnold a bit though last week, and McVay will be salivating at the opportunity to rattle him. Darnold plays better than he did against Detroit, but makes one too many mistakes, and the Rams pull it out. Divisional (1) Lions over (7) Packers, 34-28 I don't want to play them again, but I won't be surprised if that's how it shakes out. I think the week off will be crucial here, as the Packers are already banged up, and are missing their top receiving threat, which plays to the Lions' defensive strength. They are also playing Saquon and a physical Eagles team on Sunday while the Lions recover. It's not quite as close as the Thursday Night game, but it's stressful nonetheless. (4) Rams over (3) Buccaneers, 37-30 Stafford has a huge day on the Bucs pass defense that sorely misses CDIII, and demonstrates he's got one more Super Bowl in him. NFC Championship (1) Lions over (4) Rams, 31-23 The storyline that will never die gets another chapter. Lions win the playoff rematch, with the offensive line coming through clutch in the 4th quarter with some powerful runs. Lions never trail, but are never comfortable. Super Bowl LIX (1N) Lions over (5A) Chargers, 42-31 One of the higher scoring Super Bowls of all time, as Goff is a man on a mission, running away with the Super Bowl MVP. They do the unthinkable and bring home the Lombardi Trophy. Let a man dream!!!1 point

It would be cool if Canada were added too. However, I think we may be too big already. 330 million people and so much diversity. It's kind of unwieldy. And we obsess over the constitution which was written when there were fewer than 4 million people. Itwas a totally different country.1 point

Is there a reason why they couldn't just have half the teams get a bye in say week 8 and the other half in week 9? You're still going to get 18 regular season weeks of football, sure those 2 bye weeks will feature less "local games" since there will only be 8 games total each week but maybe you can make up for any lost revenue in that by bidding out some Saturday Night Prime Time games?1 point

I just discovered this history podcast, American History Hit. It sounds similar to American History Tellers, but I like Hit better than Tellers because it's a conversation with historians, versus a dramatic reenacting of events, which I find cheesy. https://shows.acast.com/american-history-hit1 point

I remember thinking that it would take a semi miracle to get to 30 wins, I guess I underrated how bad many other teams are this year and just how negative of influence the coaching has been the last few years. Bickerstaff looks like Red Auerbach compared to Monty and Casey.1 point
