  1. I thought the last thing you’d ever do is allow someone to miscalculate a players service time without correcting them.

  2. If we get a comp pick for losing a minority coach, can we use that draft pick on any player or would we be forced to use it to select a minority, like a white cornerback?

  3. the dems would have been too worried about ticking of part of their base to have done that. It's an interesting asymmetry. Both parties contain sane people and crazy people. But in the GOP, the public believes the sane people control the party when it's the crazy people that do, while on the Dem side, the people believe the crazy people control the party, but the sane people do.

  6. Getting back to delivering newspapers, in the late 1960s I had one for the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette in my small town of Auburn, Indiana and I would get up at 1:30 in the morning and deliver my 140 papers on my bike and get back to sleep by 3-3:30 AM and never had a hard time going back to sleep, even though I drank a Pepsi I would listen to a transistor radio and I remember hearing live just as I was leaving the house one morning that Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated and I ran back into the house and woke up my parents to tell them. When it was -20° it was tough to be doing this job, or when it was raining hard. On Sundays when I had 220 papers to deliver my dad would drive me around and we wouldn’t get up until 5:30 AM or six, and when we finished, we would go to the grocery store and get cheese danishes.

  8. I had a Detroit News paper route in 1978. My route was along Ryan Rd, from 11 to 12 Mile roads. I’d collect from a handful of houses each day and take my earnings and buy baseball cards.

  10. I understand all the reasons the FED always wants to move slowly and deliberately, but I think now is a time where 'sending a message' with a 25 point *increase* would have a lot more psychological effect on long terms rates than any actual slowing effect 25 pts would have on short term economy. If markets lose confidence that inflation is coming back down the rest of the way, it will make it much harder to actually make it come down. But of course the individual Fed governors also know that to bump rates would be to incur major wrath from 1600 Pennsylvania.

  12. To me I feel like that just strengthens my point because if you're good enough to play, you will as we've seen with the players I've mentioned. The better players usually get drafted higher and the lower picks take longer to develop. Sure, but I think it ignores a lot of context surrounding Cossa. Not every draft crop is the same, so even just a blanket statement like top 15 picks need to play in the NHL within 4 seasons or they're being held back is tough to apply across drafts. Then when it comes to goalies, even first rounders take longer than skaters in the same pick range. Askarov was drafted the year before Cossa and he's only now this season getting "regular" NHL time as a backup with 8 games played so far (after starting the season in the AHL). He was a much more touted goalie than Cossa and drafted slightly higher (11th), and it still took an offseason trade for him to show up in the NHL for an extended period of time mid year.

  13. 5/150 would be amount my limit on Bregman, I'd go a higher AAV for less years but don't want to guarantee anything more than 150 or 5 years. If he's fine doing something like 2/70 with a 1 yr opt out I'd be cool with something like that as well.

  15. It’s very different for picks in the top 10 overall. If he’s drafting guys this high and they aren’t playing quickly that’s a direct shot at him and the entire organization.

  19. Everyone seems to ignore that Raymond made the wings at 19 and Seider at 20. Marco Kasper is playing at 20. If they think you're good enough to play in the NHL / don't have specific big things in your game to work on you'll be in the NHL. It seems like fans don't want to hear it but guys like Edvinsson definitely had stuff to work on in the AHL before becoming full time regulars (and he's a NHL regular playing 20 minutes a game at age 21!!!), putting young guys in the NHL just to do it isn't usually going to be helpful. Especially for a goalie. So I personally disagree with this notion that Yzerman keeps prospects in the AHL just to do it.

  20. Staley isn't on the Lions staff so they wouldn't get a comp pick. If Glenn hires say Randle-el for offensive coordinator, they would get a comp pick.

  21. That came up in my feed yesterday. Then another came up where it seems the Tigers are also being sued by some scouts. All scouts were laid off for a period during the pandemic and the Tigers did not apply for the federal program to reward employers for keeping staff on during covid 19. When it was cleared to bring people back, everyone rehired was under age 60. Several age 60+ scouts filed a discrimination suit. It's been delayed and still pending. It's interesting to hear this behind the scenes stuff. I'm only 59, maybe there's still time to find a job with the Tigers.

  22. That's the secondary worry of course. I mean losing your OC or your DC (or both) will obviously hurt, but if you have a succession plan with one of your internal guys that will definitely help. I think we're all kinda assuming that Kelvin Sheppard is the Lions pick for DC if Glenn leaves, so I don't think Glenn would get a HC and then try to bring Sheppard as his DC, but maybe?? And even if he doesn't, if he takes people like Townsend (DBs) and/or Williams (DL) and/or Corrao and/or Hamilton (Asst. LBers), that means we promote Sheppard, then have to fill his slot AND any other vacancies left for people who left with Glenn. That's where the real 'brain drain' could happen. Sheppard (assuming all the scuttlebutt is true) seems like he would step in nicely as the new DC so there may not be much lost there. But if Sheppard not only needs to be the DC, but also needs to 'coach up' 3 or 4 or 5 new other coaches as well, that could take time. Now what if you have this issue on BOTH sides of the ball?

  23. This... a 1000% this. I suspect it's partly a matter of the Lions being good now, but I find SOOOO suggested things in youtube especially with click bait headlines like "What the Lions just did will change everything." or "Breaking: The Lions just signed THIS player!" or "The NFL has no answer for this move by the Lions." Youtube finally seems to have realized I don't what this after I keep flagging them as "do not recommend." I think there's just so much "content farming" going on... just put something out there. Low quality, low effort, clickbait title/thumbnail just to get the clicks and ad revenue. They're not trying to be insiders, they're not trying to be quality content or building a fan base... just want the clicks.

  25. Back in October, around the time of the VP debate, I was at a company golf function and the subject of politics came up.... generally do more listening than talking when politics come up at work, but I engaged a bit more this time. My golf cart partner didn't like Trump but also was pretty skeptical that he would pursue a lot of what he claimed he would do, or that he would ultimately be successful (ie. would face opposition within his own party on certain issues). Ukraine was an issue specifically identified in this exchange. I have no idea who he ultimately pulled the lever for, but regardless of which way he pulled the lever, a big part of both of Trump's wins has been the idea that he wouldn't attempt to do a lot of what he said he was going to do. And with Ukraine, he has transparently been in favor of leaving them out to dry. He has never really hid the ball, dating back to when he was President in 2020; this is part of who he is. None of this should be surprising. He advertised it, and this action by Mike Johnson is him acting out on that promise by removing an obstacle (ie. a Pro-Ukrainian GOP Chairman)

  26. My overriding thought is that there are too many poorly sourced NFL reports provided by the entry-level enthusiasts who are to reporting what the Michigan Militia was to the Black Hawk Down era 75th Ranger Regiment or Spirit Airlines is to the Strategic Air Command during the time of Curtis Lemay.

  27. Spent most of my 14-16 year old Summers working for my dad cutting other folks lawns. Since OSHA laws frowned on folks my age using power tools most of the job consisted of pulling weeds and raking lawns. This is before the profession became a decent money maker, it also fueled my feelings that kids should not work for their parents.

  30. Goalies and their development are weird. They all start out with talent and success before getting drafted. Some peak early, some late, and some not all. Very few of them nowadays are good from the get go and stay that way throughout their career. Many cases of Vezina winners one year and barely holding onto a job two years later.

  33. I would imagine the argument is that it is more beneficial for him to get experience being THE guy against pro players every game, including carrying that into the playoffs. Having him sitting for ~9 games a month probably isn't super ideal. Also, they may feel that he still has things to work on in his game. If you're trying to get him to focus on something specifically it probably is better in the AHL where the focus is more on developing rather than the NHL where the games "count". I'm not sure where I land on the debate, it could be beneficial for him to get NHL experience but I also don't watch a ton of Grand Rapids so I couldn't say if he's truly ready. I'm fine with them not rushing him in the end I think. I think next season will be when he makes more NHL starts with Husso and Lyon hitting free agency. Cossa also missed some games down in Grand Rapids recently so he may be getting over an injury. Lyon is also joining the team again, so this Husso start is hopefully just a blip because of the injury. Better to yoyo Husso than Cossa.

  34. Had a paper route starting at age 8, 1974. Made $4.00 every 2 weeks. That was 40 packs of cards back then. My dad drove to find me on my route one day, brought me a pack of cards the day they first showed up at Prose 5 and dime. Opened the pack and Greg Landry was on top. Very good day

  36. On the subject of Alex Bregman, I suspect Tigers Twitter and many casual fans will implode if he signs elsewhere. Just too much hype and speculation (thanks Ben Verlander and your daily tweets!). I will continue to go on record and say anything more than 4 years is probably a mistake. He picked the wrong season to decline, so it’s difficult to tell if he’s truly slowing down or it was just an anomaly. If he signs for 4 years or less with another team, then I’ll believe he really didn’t want to play in Detroit anyways. And if he’s trying to reestablish himself, Comerica probably isn’t the best environment for him. If we don’t get him, we can look to either get a RH 3B or RF via trade. Vierling will fill in at either spot, depending how they address.

  41. I get the sentiment, but it’s way too early in the offseason to be making judgments. I will say this offseason should establish what kind of gm we can expect out of Harris/Greenberg. Personally, I like the drafting and player development so far and see glimmers on the international front. Trades and free agents so far seem cautious and particular.

  42. We’ll, there is some Tigers news 😁 Detroit Tigers failed to pay hourly workers enough overtime, lawsuit states Dave Boucher, Detroit Free Press Thu, January 16, 2025 at 6:10 AM EST 2 min read A former Detroit Tigers employee sued the baseball franchise in federal court, arguing the team short-changed him and many others who regularly worked overtime in recent years. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in the Eastern District of Michigan by Derron Jones, alleges widespread miscalculation of overtime rates for Jones and other hourly workers for the franchise. Jones did not include a specific amount of money he believes he is owed. But the lawsuit seeks more than just back pay, interest and damages for Jones − his lawyers argue all hourly employees for the Tigers in the last three years is also owed some money. Jones worked in shipping and receiving from March 2017 through Aug. 6, 2024, the lawsuit states. The lawsuit does not say why he left his job. He earned a shade under $16 an hour, but routinely worked overtime. While the lawsuit says he did receive some compensation for the extra work, it failed to meet federal labor law standards. "At all relevant times, (the Tigers) had a policy and practice of willfully refusing to pay (Jones) and all putative collective members the legally required amount of overtime compensation for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours per workweek, in violation of the (Fair Labor Standards Act)," the lawsuit states. The lawsuit argues the Tigers failed to take into account all pay the workers received when calculating overtime rates. Jones' lawyers argue the franchise did not include extra money a worker may receive for a "shift premium," a perk for someone working an irregular shift, and other bonuses. They say all of this compensation must be used to calculate a person's base pay before determining overtime; typically, 1.5 times a person's base pay. The lawyers are asking the judge to give them class action status and require the Tigers to provide them details about other hourly workers. Tigers spokesman Ben Fidelman said the team hat yet to receive the complaint so declined additional comment. Lawyers representing Jones − Jonathan Melmed and Laura Supanich of Los Angeles and Kevin J. Stoops of Southfield − also did not return messages seeking comment.
