I think McVay is a good offensive mind, but I think Campbell is a better coach. When Goff was struggling, Campbell took control and took him under his wing and coached him up and it paid off with a Pro Bowl season. McVay played games and benched him in favor of John Wolford.

You're exactly right. Stafford dragged McVay across the finish line. That Super Bowl season pushed off what would likely have been an early flame out to McVay's head coaching career.

It is still easy to imagine McVay flaming out if he has another disappointing season next year, or wearing out his welcome if his coaches or players turn on him as it seems was about to happen at the end of last season.

i think richardson has a chance to be a superstar....and a chance to be the next mitch trubisky or akili smith.

bryce young is a quandry.  he's really too small but he's such a good playmaker.

stroud's low "processing" score is worrisome.  might be slow on the uptake like fields without the amazing athletic ability.

dont know enough about levis.

not sure i would risk it for any of them.

I think the chances of Richardson becoming a superstar are remote. QBs with that level of inaccuracy succeeding at a high level in the NFL are big outliers. I'd take the limited physical package of Young (the size outlier) with very high processing skills and accuracy over the more toolsy Richardson (the accuracy outlier) even for upside not accounting for floor.

I see the upside for Young vs. Richardson as something like Brees vs. Newton. I know who I'd take between those two.

If I wasn't married and this actually happened, I would propose to you..... If the lions walk away with Anderson AND Robinson, that is a draft win all in itself.

It's much easier to develop a good run game than to find a QB who can succeed without a good run game or offensive line.

I think this is true. How many QBs are there in the NFL in any given season who can succeed without a good O-line and a good running game? A half dozen at best?

The last couple years ESPN has been good about not spoiling the picks by showing the players smiling on their phones talking to the team picking them, I hope that is the case again this year.

Which also reminds me to stay off twitter atleast around the Lions pick cause I just love the suspense of finding out who they are picking right when Goodell makes the announcement.

This year too, they are supposed to be reducing the number of "his mom died at 14 and now he's a draftee" or "his sister has battled a drug addiction for years" stories.

if they dont take a qb early, take one late and make them a 3rd stringer but not a backup.  they have ambitions this season and if goff goes down they need a quality backup, not a guy just cutting his teeth.

I was listening to the Locked on Lions podcast yesterday and they had a guest on... can't remember who, but he brought up an interesting point: That the Lions might be suffering a bit by not having a mobile QB on the scout team. The guest mentioned picking up someone like Thompson-Robinson in the draft on the off chance that you could develop him into a star and if not, at least you have someone mobile for the defense to practice against.

Where do you have Calijah Kancey going? If he was there at 48 I would have taken him. Also, is the Swift trade straight up a 4th rounder for him or are getting something more?  A 4th for Swift seems low, but I might be putting too much value on him.

You mean after they come back a commercial break?

That's true, it's pretty much a given they will go to break right before the Lions pick only for them to return seconds before the announcement.

Also you're pretty much guaranteed that they will spend 5 minutes after you pick interviewing a previous selection so they never get to break down your selection.

I do really like Goff although I just don't feel like you can pay him ridiculous money and assume its not going to affect the rest of the team with cap hits.  I think the Daniel Jones signing wasn't the smartest move although maybe I missing something with him.  You can pay Generational talent like Mahomes, Brady, Manning and still win Championships losing other great players.  Although if Holmes continues drafts like the last two, you can pay Goff and just keep on replacing other players.  That will be his decision.

I just want a patient approach with this team and not necessarily go for broke this year.  If that means taking a QB you feel is better for the sustained success of this team I am all for it.  If you feel like Goff is the best for that sustained success than I am good with that as well.  I will say that QB position is the hardest to draft for when there isn't the blue chip guy like Luck or Manning.

I don't know where I heard it or for what team for that matter but I swear I was watching a game this past year and the announcers brought up how the team did indeed use a WR or RB as the scout team qb to prepare the defense for the mobile qb they were facing.

Lots of teams do that. I know Iowa does when we face a running QB cause all of ours are statues. So they take like the 5th RB and put him back there.
