  1. Not even the worst contract the Tigers have given to an overweight 1B in the past 12 years. They were just able to unload the other.

  2. Donald Trump and all of his family members are innocent until proven guilty in the court of law. That said, it would seem that there is a mountain of evidence, over many years, that will finally bring some level of justice to the many people and business entities that he, his children, and his business enterprises have done wrong to over the years. Calling Donald Trump Fredo Corleone from the movie The Godfather, or comparing one of his sons to the movie character, in a moment such as this would be too easy and would do a disservice to the gravity of the situation at hand. Saying that he is just some dumb, mafioso-like criminal takes away from the seriousness of the financial crimes he is accused of by the New York Attorney General's Office and the potential, future, pending charges by any federal jurisdiction. It is clear to me that it has appeared, over a long period of time, that Donald Trump has operated on a rules for thee, but not for me status. It is clear that he, his family, and his business enterprises have skirted the law for years using many different methods. They have collectively ripped off many hard working people and other business investors, dodged paying taxes, and produced outright fabricated financial statements, lying about his personal and business financial balance sheets, earned income, and overall accumulated wealth. If you or I as average Americans did what the former President, his children, and his business enterprise areaccused of doing we'd have been held accountable and faced the long arm of the law long ago. Today is one step closer towards bringing a small semblance of justice for those that Donald Trump, his children, and his businesses have lied to, cheated, and hustled over the years. The amount of wealth potentially stolen by all parties involved and a full account of the the pain and suffering caused to enumerable amounts of people and other business entities may never be fully known. Yet again, we have a black woman to thank for enforcing the rule of law, up holding democracy, and hopefully bringing justice to bare. Thank you to New York State Attorney General Letitia James and her entire team for all of their thorough and diligent work in this case. This matter isn't over and the case not closed. Donald Trump, his family members charges, and all his business associates are still innocent until proven guilty. This is a sad day for our country. Sad that Donald Trump was able to get away with this for all these years and sad that he became our President and continued the grift during his tenure as President. I do not celebrate these charges and I do not exhibit exuberance or joy at the damage potentially caused by Donald Trump. I wish for fair and honest justice to be brought by the court of law. I hope that we continue to fight for a more just and equitable system of justice and society. I hope that we recognize and commit to the American ideal that no individual, regardless of their position of power, is above the law and deserving of special status or treatment.

  5. I worry about playing a team right after they got embarrassed on national TV. I have no idea if there is actual any real data to support this but it always feels to me like teams respond positively the next week after something like that.

  7. And now, now, they are again trumpeting “rebuilding.“ The Neverending Rebuild. This is inexcusable. Yes indeed they had a lot of bad luck. But other teams have bad luck too. Other teams have enough depth to survive bad luck. And while I wasn’t expecting Tork or Greene to have Tony Conigliaro rookie years, I was expecting more. This franchise has eroded my ability to care. If they sold the franchise to King Charles III he couldn’t do any worse than Chris has done because neither of them know much about baseball.

  9. I think the Tigers going forward will be a lot more active on the back end of the 40 man roster and on the edges of the roster.

  10. Skubal's return is hopefully May 2023, who knows whether he will have the same stuff. Mize is out probably until 2024. Turnbull is a maybe for 2023. If we can get ONE of these two guys back in form by 2024 that would be good. Two seems hopeful, three seems like a pipe-dream. I would be surprised to see any of them pitch up to their previous standards in 2023. Breiske, Hill, Alexander, Hutch, Garcia, Faedo....love what they've done this year to fil lin for 5-15 starts each, but everybody knows that these are all marginal pitchers, not key parts of any future winning team. None of them has above average command, or out-pitches, or groundball production, or more than 1 or 2 reliable pitches in their repertoire. None of these guys should be counted on as a solution. So yeah you've got ERod, who should be able to give you 25 starts with 15 QS and an above-average ERA. You have Manning, who has turned in a decent 60 IP this year with a nice fastball, plus control, below average secondary pitches, and an unsustainably low HR/FB% of 7%....projects to an average starter, not bad, hopefully he can pull down 20+ starts in 2023 that sustain/improve on his current profile as a hopefully-middle-of-the-pack SP. Wentz is kinda interesting, he might turn into a decent starter, if he can stay healthy. Flores might see some action in Detroit in 2023, and Madden projects to 2024, they look like they might be decent or better. Maybe one of these guys pans out as an effective SP? Seems to me that we would be in great shape if we had four guys from the above list throwing 20+ starts effectively for them in 2024. In my opinion, even if things worked out, they would still need at least one more good pitcher from outside the system to build a winning rotation in 2024. I'm betting two. Baddoo is basically a "hoped for" guy at this point, I hope that he can churn out a decent season or three a la Boesch. Tork is still a premiere prospect who MUST be a 3+ WAR player for this team, and based on how he's been hitting since he came back from Toledo, that seems increasingly likely....if not, we are in worse shape than I thought. I think Carpenter, Kreidler, Lipcius, Perez, Dingler, and others will be getting a shot at playing time in 2023/24. I feel pretty confident that Carpenter and Kriedler can add some value, and I think Carpenter can be a 2 WAR player in 2023. I think Lipcius might also push out some of the potential deadwood (Candy) in the IF with some higher quality play. Perez and Dingler might be valuable semi-regular/bench players by 2024. Hopefully some/most of the above positional prospects (other than Tork and Greene, who project to be above average or better) wind up being average players in their respective roles, but I don't think anyone sees positional all-stars coming out of the minors within the next couple of years. No ONE thing can "fix" this team overnight, that's never been my claim. But hoping for or expecting this roster and minor-league system to produce a winning team is a total pipe-dream. Most or everything that broke this year has to improve or bounce back to normal levels in order for them to chase 80 wins. In order to build a winner without waiting 3-5 years, they were always going to need at least one or two more good players from outside of the system to make it happen. Bottom line: if Harris is going to build a winner in less than 3-5 years, before 2024 starts, they will be adding at least two good multi-year FAs.

  11. I won't pop the cork yet that they hold this mafioso to account, but you can only cosplay Fredo for so long before you make a mistake, screw up it all up, and get caught. Once again, black women are saving democracy and the rule of law in America.

  12. the 2023 rotation is currently fronted by 2 question marks, ERod and Manning, followed by 6-8 more questions marks, Turnbull, Faedo, Wentz, Madden, Olson, Flores, Garcia .... Mize won't pitch in 2023. Skubal will miss 1/2 the season. Hinch was saying that both Hill and Brieske are looking better as relievers. Everyone either a rookie or coming off injury. Someone, unfortunately, will need TJ in 2023. No idea who, but that's going to happen. they need a starter of consequence.

  16. The Tigers are going to finish the year losing 100 games, that doesn't sound like a jumping off point to bring in a bunch of free agents. I believe they will not spend much money this year, at least on multi year deals, and evaluate the numerous starting pitchers they have in various stages of recovery. They are where they are and the prudent play is to treat 2023 like another year of rebuilding, which again what a team coming off 100 losses should do. If they get some luck on the health of their young starters and a couple of the decent prospects they have pan out they will have something to build around.

  19. The end of the contract is the reward for the meat of the contract. The money was spread out a couple of extra years knowing that the value of 10 million dollars was different from 10 million dollars 9 years later.

  26. Observations from the presser... Illitch's statement on Harris being innovative and not chasing what others are doing seemed, umm... pointed. Illitch also mentioned the people who helped. There are currently five VP's or AGM's on staff. Four were named. David Chadd wasn't.

  31. You can't hire a GM from another organization to be a GM unless they aren't under contract. You can hire them for a higher title. That's behind almost all title creep. Anyways, the GM of the following teams is not the top dog in baseball ops: Brewers, Guardians, Rays, Athletics, Phillies, Cardinals, Dodgers, Giants, Cubs, Twins, Red Sox, Royals Most teams have 3-6 or so AGM's or VP's (in Baseball Ops), with some having as many as 12-15. A lot of AGM/VP's are, again, promoted to keep from being poached. Kevin Goldstein had a segment on this on his nascent podcast between his Astros and Twins job. You really like your player development director? Promote him to Assistant General Manager-Player Development, and he can't be hired as Player Development Director. Anyways, I'm not kidding when I say I deep dived the org charts of all 30 organizations last month. In general, your baseball ops org structure: President, Baseball Ops General Manager Assistant General Manager (Special Assistant is somewhere on this tier. Some are ceremonial, like Horton. Some are doing actual work, like Slater/McLeod/Goldstein) Director Assistant Director Coordinator Manager (Not like AJ Hinch manager. I'm talking in the analytics department, manager is a tier) And from here it depends on the department. There was remarkable standardization on this front. There are also several duel titles on the executive side that some baseball ops people get President Executive Vice President Vice President Did you know Al Avila was EVP? Did you know Menzin, Sartori, Chadd, Bream, and Garko are VP's?

  33. Don't blame you at all Bert. I had hope finally coming into this season that they would be decent, and they have been victimized by horrible horrible bad luck, but they also have three "showcase" players who were still in their prime years who turned into nightmares this year (Baez, Schoop, and Candy), a marquee 1st Rounder who bombed (Tork), another 1st Rounder who failed health-wise (Mize), along with another prime-time star (Meadows), and all we can do is hope that they all rebound at some point. This organization has been a bleep-show for a long time, and Chris I has never demonstrated the ability or will to be a successful owner, starting with having Avila sell off Verlander for beans and then pulling a Sgt. Shultz ("I knew nothingk!!") on the trade recently. My "bright line" is Miggy, I admire the way they handled his great milestones this year, and I think the organization is to be commended for that. But I can't take another season of trying to remember when Miggy was healthy and something above Replacement level (2016 and before), while watching light bloopers to right and groundouts where the fielders practice soft-tossing to first and Miggy can't even get in the camera shot down the 1st base line. I realize 2023 is going to be a Hail Mary, but I cannot continue to watch a team that thinks that's what I want to see. I hope that Chris realizes that he has been the author of this garbage and spends a little $$ to help get the roster into some kind of decent shape. I'm not talking about spending like his dad, I'm just saying get up to the league average of payroll (which isn't chump change) and saints forbid maybe even go a little beyond that. Shouldn't the fans EXPECT and DEMAND a decent and maybe even winning product? What the heck.
